The First Automated Baggage Handling Application

In the early 1980s, the worldwide traffic of goods and people was experiencing a rapid growth. At the same time, there was a rising adoption of automated conveyor systems for transportation and parcel sorting at post offices, courier centers and for luggage handling at airports. With its stationary industrial barcode readers, Datalogic starts the implementation of automatic reading stations, capable of dynamic, omnidirectional identification of barcode labeled parcels and luggage on high-speed conveyors. In 1984, the world’s first automated baggage handling application was successfully deployed at Milan Linate airport in Italy.
